YouTube launched as a Dating Site – And Without PayPal, there wouldn’t be any YouTube

- By Dwaipayan, 04 December 2020 | 4 MIN READ

On average, a YouTuber spends somewhere between 15 and 25 minutes a day on the site. Did you ever try to guess the most-watched YouTube clip? Can you name the founders? Or how many times a minute a YouTube link is tweeted? YouTube is larger than life. More video content is uploaded to YouTube in 60 days than the three major U.S. television networks created in 60 years.

There are heaps of interesting data, information, and statistics about YouTube — Here are the top seven fascinating facts on YouTube

1. PayPal's Role in YouTube's Creation

YouTube was started by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim in 2005. The three founders worked for an Internet start-up, PayPal. In fact, it was Hurley who designed the PayPal logo. Also, YouTube was initially funded by bonuses received following the eBay buy-out of PayPal. You can argue that without PayPal there would be no YouTube!

2. YouTube's as a Dating Site

Could you believe YouTube launched as a video dating site dubbed "Tune in Hook Up," said to be influenced by HotorNot. But the three founders then decided not to go that path. How did they hit the jackpot? Well, the inspiration was from two videos; The first was Karim's inability to find footage online of Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction," and the second when Hurley and Chen were unable to share video footage of a dinner party due to e-mail attachment limitations.

3. The YouTube Domain name and chaos associated!

The domain name YouTube.com was registered on Valentine's Day in 2005. However, this caused a spat for Universal Tube & Rollform Equipment based in Perrysburg, Ohio. The company domain, "utube.com," was overwhelmed with bad spellers who tried the video site's name phonetically. The company filed a suit against YouTube claiming its business was damaged by the video site. Nowadays, its business site has been moved to utubeonline.com and the original utube.com is a video-themed landing page for bad spellers.

4The First uploaded YouTube Video

The first video on YouTube is Shot by Yakov Lapitsky at the San Diego Zoo it shows co-founder Jawed Karim in front of the elephant enclosure going on about long trunks. The video racked up 4,282,497 views since its online debut on April 23, 2005.

5. YouTube’s Jaw-Dropping Statistics

If we take February 2011, YouTube has 490 million unique users worldwide per month. Could you believe viewers spend around 2.9 billion hours on YouTube in a month and the stats are just for the main YouTube website without embedded videos or video watched on mobile devices.

6. YouTube's Social Stats

On average there are more than 400 tweets per minute containing a YouTube link. And on Facebook over 150 years’ worth of YouTube videos are watched every single day.

7. The Most Viewed, Liked, and Favourite Video

Baby Shark, the cute and ultra-catchy children’s song recorded by South Korean company Pinkfong, has become the most viewed video ever on YouTube. At 7.04bn views, it edges past Despacito, the 2017 single by Puerto Rican pop stars Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.
