How I over came failure or How I became successful

- By Shalini K, 18 January 2021 | 8 MIN READ

Failure is inevitable. It’s very unlikely that one has succeeded without tasting failure at one point or the other. Every successful person has been through failures right at the beginning or during their journey. It all depends on how you take up failure. Some people face the challenges with perseverance, sacrifice their needs or short term gratifications and keep working towards success. Most of us just accept failures and blame others or life.

Generally we are not successful because our goals are very vague. We lack the clarity of what we want in life or business. For example we all want money but don’t know how much. If we don’t know where we want to go, how can we reach that place?

Unless we know our destination we will be going round and round and land in place where are not ready to settle down. Similarly if we are not clear and passionate about what we want we will never make necessary effort to reach our goal. We end up just day dreaming. First step towards success is to define where you want to be in 5 yrs or 10 yrs and work towards that goal.

There is no quick mantra to become rich or successful. There is no substitute for planning and hard work. We will discuss 5 important aspects of success. Without which its very unlikely that you are on the path of success.

1. Goals: Do you know where you want to go.

There is no journey without a destination. Take little time to observe people you know, people who are successful and people who are not. If possible call them and ask them about their goals. The difference is clearly evident. Successful people know what they want in life. They are very clear and they work towards them.

When you set your goals, make sure that they are yours. Never get influenced by others to set your destination. They have to come from deep within you. When goals are your own, you will persist through all hardships. It will keep you remain focused because that’s what drives you. If you are not going anywhere in life, just look at your goals. Either you don’t have any goals or they are too vague.

Having short term and long terms goals will help you measure your progress.

2. People Skills

How are your people skills? You might have heard about the book “what got you here, won’t get you there” by Marshall Goldsmith. It’s one of the books that you should read to be on path of success. Many leaders or managers lack people skills.

People fail to notice that it’s their own personality traits that stop them from growing or advancing in their careers.  At times leaders get so caught up with themselves to the point of being obnoxious that, it becomes impossible to work with them. Reflect upon your own personality traits, you will be surprised that there would be lot much to be improved as per your personality is concerned.

People skills are one of the most indispensible tools if you want to succeed to grow further in life.

3.  Subject Matter Expert

After certain point we give up learning and rely on experience for growth. It happens with all of us. We are living in an ever changing world where technology is advancing at rapid space with new innovations in every field. What’s relevant couple of years ago might not be relevant today or tomorrow. People are selling and buying online, attending virtual meetings, learning online etc.

If you are not investing your time in learning new skills or learning new trends in your expert area, sooner or later you will become irrelevant. The world is bustling with so many start-up companies’ opportunities and challenges as well. And there is enough completion to push you down.

Improving your skill set very often is the only way to stay relevant. Take weekend courses.

4. Read

What’s the latest book you are reading? The advantages of reading a book are multi-fold. It widens your perspective and broadens your world view. Reading keeps your mind active and increases your creative ability. It imparts knowledge on various aspects and about the world.

Needless to say there are many benefits of reading books. It improves your vocabulary enormously there by increasing your confidence levels as well. Book reading is one of the best stress busters which also help you get good sleep. It has been scientifically proven that reading prevents cognitive decline as you age.

It’s never too late to make reading a habit. Pick a book and just start reading.

5. Health

You might be an expert and all charged up to go to work day in day out. But does your health support that? Health is very critical for over all wellness of life.  If you are not healthy you cannot become successful, even if you become successful at the cost of your health, you will not be in a position to enjoy the benefits of your success.

Make healthy habits part of your life like eating healthy food and avoid fast/junk food. Get enough sleep and exercise regularly. Take a break for recreation and cultivate a hobby like painting, writing, playing etc. And get enough sleep. Many people get burned out by working hours together at the risk of their health. It will not lead you anywhere.

It’s understandable if you have to put extra hours of work for a project but don’t make it your life style. Cultivate healthy habits and stay healthy.

Final thoughts

Success of your life depends on your daily routine.  Pay attention to your daily routine and analyze how much of your time is being spent on yourself improvement and towards your goal. You will find your answer either of failure or success.

Our success lies in our thought and actions, always thinking about your goals and put them into action.
