US Physicians Call For Universal Healthcare

By wochit 17 October 2016

In a proposal released on Thursday in the American Journal of Public Health, a group of more than 2,000 physicians called for the establishment of a universal health system. According to the doctors, the Affordable Care Act did not go far enough in removing barriers to healthcare access, and the group wants a single-payer system similar to Canada’s, that would guarantee all US residents healthcare. Under the proposal, all residents would be able to see any physician of their choosing in the country and be treated at any hospital. The proposal stands in stark contrast to the opinions of the American Medical Association, which is the largest organization of physicians in the US, and which opposes the idea of a single-payer model.
