Study Finds Fetal Brain Amplifies Weak Neural Signal Strength

By wochit 14 October 2016

A new study identified a special amplifier in the fetal brain that boosts signal strength during the early phases of development. Using neonatal mice as a test subject, researchers at George Washington University examined the cerebral cortex and thalamus areas of the brain during development, when neurons are still developing. Focusing on signals coming from the eye, the researchers found that the cortex multiplies feedback input coming from the retina, which amplifies the signal.Since neural connections are still developing, that amplification is needed to ensure information transfers accurately.
