Researchers Discover Giant Cold Spot On Jupiter

By Editor 13 April 2017

Researchers have discovered a second giant spot on the surface of Jupiter, a dark mark on the planet twice the size of Earth. This cool spot sits in Jupiter's northern regions, near the stunning northern aurora in the planet's atmosphere. Study coauthor Tom Stallard, a planetary scientist at the University of Leicester in England, said, "We can’t be exactly sure how the spot forms. But we are sure it is there because we observed it numerous times.” While team mapped the Jupiter's atmosphere temperature and density, they discovered a region about 73 degrees Celsius cooler than the gas surrounding it. By comparing the data with observations from the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii, researched found that the cold, dark mark had actually been seen in the same location for over 15 years.
