"I send pointless emails late at night to impress coworkers"
Have you ever come across a rude employee in your career? Are you dealing with a rude leader now? According to a study in the Academy of Management Journal, rudeness can damage team performance, reduce helpfulness and collaboration, and negatively impact workplace relationships
A rude employee brings down the morale of every colleague they are working with, decreasing productivity and work satisfaction. Rudeness can be a way to display power within a team or organizational relationship, to try to get your own way on something, or simply to provoke a reaction. It can also be a response to stress, pressure, or frustration. Being on the receiving end of rude behavior can make you feel angry, upset, and aggrieved. If it's not nipped in the bud, it can become "normalized" and embedded into your workplace culture. It can also escalate from low-level incidents into aggressive, bullying behavior.
Squashing the rude behavior is critical to a productive business, a positive work environment that all employees deserve. Here’s how to deal with the negative employee effectively to get the attitude problem under control quickly.
Show patience to a rude colleague. Dealing with kindness could help him relax and calm his rudeness.
Put some questions to determine if the person is deliberately being rude or it’s a natural side of his. For example, if an employee gets up and walks away without acknowledging you, ask if she wants any kind of assistance.
Is rude behaviour affecting business? Take action if employees have negative feedback or if clients are on the receiving end of the rudeness.
Have a conversation with the rude employee or call at your office to discuss his/her behaviour. Try to understand the tone or actions and how they were perceived as rude or unprofessional. Work with the teams, co-workers to help improve his attitude and image of being considered rude.
Do not engage in similar unprofessional behaviours along with other employees to gossip about a colleague, Gossips are killers!
It is important to keep a check of your own tone and behaviour too! Ensure you aren’t rude at workplace without realizing it. Managers can set an office environment that encourages rude behaviour.
Take disciplinary action if the rudeness is aimed at one specific colleague. Let the rude member of the team know without exception that the behaviour is not acceptable at any cost.
You can consider raising your concerns with your HR department. Give them proof to back up your claims, such as a written log of instances when you were subjected to rude or unacceptable behavior. Human Resource department has a responsibility to create a safe and conducive environment to work and will be keen to reduce staff turnover, so they might offer a range of solutions from mediation to disciplinary action, as appropriate.
This approach will likely have consequences for your relationship with your manager, but it will send a clear signal that you refuse to be treated in this way. If there is still no improvement in your situation, or if your relationship with your boss breaks down completely, you may have to consider the final option of looking for opportunities elsewhere, either within your organization or externally.
To deal with rudeness in the workplace, be a good role model for your team members; never ignore it; deal quickly and directly with the culprit; listen to both sides; and follow up on any offender.
