Oxygen Emerged Into Earth's Atmosphere Earlier Than Predicted

By wochit 07 February 2017

New dating suggests that the breathable air of oxygen may have emerged onto Earth, 100 million years earlier than previously thought. Previous studies have shown oxygen's first appearance in Earths' atmosphere at a little over 2.3 billion years ago. Now new dating from ancient volcanic outpourings suggest that oxygen levels may have begun as much as 2.46 billion years ago. The new date and time difference is significant to scientists and researchers, in what prompted the the evolution of the first oxygen-dependent life-forms.
