New Mental Health Director Focuses On Brain Circuits

By wochit 27 October 2016

49-year-old Joshua Gordon has just become director of the National Institute of Mental Health after spending 19 years as a staff member at Columbia University. Gordon spent much of that time studying neural circuits in mice. Gordon explains that after studying in the lab, it’s easy to see how patterns of brain activity and its structure influence behavior. He says that every patient is different, that they don’t fit into a “neat category.” As the new director, Gordon wants to focus on neural circuits, computational psychiatry, and suicide. His more advanced outlook on mental health will make way for exciting new research in the field.
